The Journey To Wireless
Another Damaged Cable
A
deadman switch is a safety critical device built to withstand the abrasive sandblasting environment and, currently, it gets connected back to the sandblasting pot using a cable only slightly more rugged than the one you use to power your television.
A deadman cable was never designed to survive this destructive environment and so, it doesn’t. When it fails, there are two ways this can go.
1. Open Circuit
This prevents the blast pot from ever turning on and leads to unavoidable downtime. Blasters are forced to find the breakage and replace the damaged section of cable. This is not a quick troubleshooting process, and it is not a quick fix.
2. Short Circuit
This prevents the blast pot from ever turning OFF, as if the deadman switch was permanently closed. This is a massive safety concern and whether it occurs due to frayed or pinched cables, it happens far too often in the abrasive blasting industry and leads to serious injury.
